School of the Prophets

The School of the Prophets is never mentioned in the Bible, and yet it is one of the most commonly searched phrases on the internet.

Islam, Judah, Christian, and New Age advocates all share a common interest in prophets and the School of the Prophets. More than likely, those searching the internet for the School of the Prophets are either Prophets themselves, or have been enlightened in some sense and are seeking others with a similar interest.

Prophets are those who commune with God and have something to share. Do you have something to share? Have you had an experience with God that qualifies you as a Prophet?

Many prophets have come before, and no doubt there are many on the earth at this time. God always wants to communicate with his children. He wishes as Moses said - "that all his people were prophets."

Prophets can share a common interest - God, and yet come from different traditions. God needs Prophets among all traditions, who can hear and impart his word.

Latter-day Saints will be surprised to know what Amos meant when he said that God would do nothing without first revealing his will through his Prophets. Amos was not priesthood ordained, nor was he referring to priesthood ordained Prophets:

Amos 3:7

Surely the Lord God will do nothing but he revealeth his secrets unto his servants the prophets. (KJV)

Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. (NKJV)

Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets. (NIV)

Amos 7:14-15

14 Then Amos answered, and said to Amaziah:" I was no prophet, Nor was I a son of a prophet, But I was a sheepbreeder And a tender of sycamore fruit. 15 Then the LORD took me as I followed the flock, And the LORD said to me," Go, prophesy to My people Israel." (NKJV)

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: 15 And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.(KJV)

14 Amos answered Amaziah, "I was neither a prophet nor a prophet's son, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.' (NIV)

Imagine also knowing that the apostle Paul was actually a Apostle called directly by God who never received priesthood authority and was never called by Peter, James or John. Yet all of Christianity is based in a large part upon his writings, which fills most of the New Testament.

1 Paul, an apostle, not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead; (Galatians 1:1)

The following is a bit of historical information for Mormons regarding the School of the Prophets as it was originally initiated among their people, but has since ceased to exist.

D &C 88:127

127 And again, the order of the house prepared for the presidency of the school of the prophets, established for their instruction in all things that are expedient for them, even for all the officers of the church, or in other words, those who are called to the ministry in the church, beginning at the high priests, even down to the deacons--

Why is this important?

The church membership is only as good as its leaders.

If there is no difference in knowledge, training, or resources between the members and the leaders, then they will all stay at the lowest common denominator. Which is quite safe for a people who are not experienced in the word and who have not learned discernment.

But is it fair to require the entire membership to stay at the gospel essentials level? This spiritual environment could be identified as "stagnant."

By having a fully trained ministry i.e. School of the Prophets, the entire membership could benefit by coming up from that lowest common denominator.

Such an environment would be more inviting to those who do want to become experienced in the word and who do want to move onto perfection, as Paul suggests. Please read:
